H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) was an influential American journalist, essayist, and cultural critic known for his satirical and often acerbic commentary on American life and politics. A prominent figure in the early 20th-century literary scene, he is best remembered for his work in the Baltimore Sun and his critique of American puritanism and populism, particularly during the Scopes "Monkey" Trial.
